This latest work by A. Gálvez, dedicated to the relationship between Mysticism and Poetry, forms a perfect pairing with his previous work The Mystery of Prayer . Both constitute an attempt to present the most important and sublime realities to which the human being can aspire: the love of lovers between God and man, and the ideal "locus" to make it possible, which is that of mystical prayer or, as it is classically called, "contemplative" prayer, the highest that man has been granted to have from God.
The challenge that A. Gálvez proposes is not minor: he tries to expose an authentic universe of mysteries, which, being realities for those who have been allowed to live them, are nevertheless inexpressible with simple human language for third parties. There is one last resource: Poetry. It is human language, but it has a "duende" that allows it to reach where prose does not, showing the reader a world of suggestions, emotions, Beauty..., which in some way makes up for the indicated insufficiency. True Poetry takes us to the threshold of an ineffable universe, to Mysticism, and invites us in an exuberant way to enter it.
The text is an invitation to Christians to live realities that, while in themselves ineffable, have become even more distant to many due to the "harshness of the demands" and the "exoteric nature of the explanations" with which these themes have traditionally been treated. On the other hand, the author denounces the false mysticisms that abound today and cause confusion in many minds, pointing out the features of the authentic.
Thus, throughout the treatise, themes as suggestive as the loneliness of lovers, the metaphorical descriptions used in the love relationship, dialogue, the whisper of love, reciprocity in love, the loving gaze, peace and tranquility in the journey of contemplative life, participation in the Death of Christ, contemplative vision, sound and music in Mystical Poetry, etc., are presented.
The appeal to Beauty as an ideal means to enter into the field of Mysticism is made evident by the adjusted, measured and abundant use of poetry, both that revealed in The Song of Songs , as in the sublime lyres of San Juan de la Cruz, and in the original stanzas of the author. However, the book has the additional merit of speaking of such sublime and beautiful realities, with a language of extraordinary beauty, to the point that we find that the whole book is flooded with true poetic prose.
The exposition also stands out for its theological foundation (Trinitarian, Christological, anthropological, etc. together with the author's own theology of Love), orthodox and at the same time fertile in possibilities for new explorations.
Finally, it is worth pointing out the audacity of dedicating a book to themes so far removed from the mood of so many in this paganized, secularized and even anti-Christian age, and which for this very reason will serve as a spiritual balm and source of strength for so many Christians who yearn and long to live in the wonderful and extraordinary world of true loving relationships that God offered to his children.
